Elizabeth (Liz) Smith is a SNAP-Ed Regional Program Specialist for Ohio State University Extension. Liz covers a 30 county region of program assistants who are offering nutrition education to those receiving food assistance benefits or eligible to receive those benefits. Liz works with the program assistants in all the counties in her Region in the areas of professional development and financials. She also has day to day supervision in those counties that currently do not have a Family and Consumer Sciences Educator. This is an 85% appointment. She also has a 10% FCS appointment, and a 5% EFNEP appointment as a nutrition resource for that program. Prior to this position, which she has held since November 2012, Liz piloted this concept in a 20 county area.
Prior to the Regional Program Specialist position Liz was a Family Consumer Sciences Educator in Wyandot County. Wyandot County is a small rural county in Ohio. Liz taught a lot of nutrition programs such as Dining with Diabetes, nutrition for heart health, nutrition for a healthy weight, a youth cooking program for juvenile offenders and many other topics.
Before working with OSU Extension Liz was a clinical dietitian. She primarily worked in pediatrics and neonatal nutrition. Liz obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue in Dietetics, her internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, her Masters from Central Michigan in Health Science Administration and is currently starting her PhD at OSU.
